About Us

ActionAid tackles the effects of poverty. We also change what keeps people poor.

  • Your questions answered

Together with more than 2,000 civil society partners worldwide, we work with and support the poorest and most vulnerable people to fight for and gain their rights to food, shelter, work, basic healthcare and a voice in the decisions that affect their lives.

  • How we work

At ActionAid we take advantage of over 30 years of knowledge and experience in fighting poverty. We don't impose solutions, but work with communities over many years to strengthen their own efforts to throw off poverty.

  • Our history

Founded in 1972, ActionAid has been fighting poverty worldwide for over 30 years. In 2003, ActionAid's work reached almost 13 million people in Africa, Asia and the Americas.

  • Our vision and values

Eradicating poverty is not a distant dream, but one we can realistically achieve. ActionAid believes that poverty continues to exist as a result of choices made over time about how societies should be organised and that by working together, we can choose differently - individually and collectively - if we wish.

  • Global review - Taking stock II

It is one of ActionAid’s main priorities to be transparent and openly accountable to all of its stakeholders: the public, funders, partners, and perhaps most importantly, the poor people with whom we work.

  • Open information

ActionAid UK believes that timely, free-flowing information in accessible language, form and format is essential for ensuring accountability to our stakeholders, learning, trust and good performance.

Who we target

  • International institutions

In a world that is every more closely interconnected the British Government has an impact beyond Britain’s borders. ActionAid works to push the British Government to play a positive role on the international stage through its membership of international institutions, at summits and meetings with their counterparts.

  • The British government

The British Government is a primary target of the work of ActionAid in the UK. Decisions made by British politicians, civil servants and special advisors can make a huge difference to the lives of millions of people in the developing world.

  • Parliament and political parties

ActionAid works to influence the international development policies of British political parties and help parliament to hold the British Government to account.

  • Who we work with

ActionAid believes that we can be more effective by working with others. In the UK we are members of all of the major NGO coalitions and played a leading part in the Make Poverty History campaign of 2005.
