ActionAid confirms its commitment to helping poor and vulnerable people in Zimbabwe

06 June 2008

Following yesterday's announcement by the Zimbabwean government to suspend all field work by aid groups and non-governmental organisations, ActionAid Zimbabwe's Acting Country Representative, Ennie Chipembere, confirmed that ActionAid will respect the Government suspension, but affirms its commitment to helping poor people in the country in the long-term.

Ms. Chipembere said:

"ActionAid is non-partisan and we are committed to working with the people of Zimbabwe to help them end hunger and poverty. We hope to be able to get back to work as soon as possible in order to respond to the very real needs of the poorest people on the ground."

ActionAid employs 35 staff in Zimbabwe, all of whom are Zimbabwean nationals. Following this suspension of all NGOs field work by the Zimbabwean government, we will maintain limited office based activity only.

ActionAid work in Zimbabwe is focused on food security, HIV/Aids, education, women's rights and humanitarian assistance. We operate in the rural districts of Chiendambuya, Hwedza and Makoni, and the urban areas of Harare, Gweru, Chitungwiza and Bulawayo.
