How your fundraising helps
Meet Nabwiru, a refugee from Democratic Republic of Congo now living in Uganda.
The Covid-19 pandemic had a huge impact on the basic supplies reaching the settlement, meaning that sanitary products were deprioritised. Without period products girls are more likely to miss school, increasing their risk of child marriage.
ActionAid is working in the settlement to distribute pads, as well as teaching girls like Nabwiru how they can make their own reusable pads.
Nabwiru told us how important the training is in helping girls avoid forced marriage and early pregnancy, as well as providing her with an income:
When we make surplus pads, we sell them so that we can save."
The training has provided Nabwiru with the confidence to speak about the challenges that women and girls face.
