Zahra Hdidou, Senior Climate and Resilience Advisor at ActionAid UK, said:
“It's deeply concerning that HSBC is pushing its climate targets back to 2050—well beyond the critical window needed to prevent irreversible harm to communities, particularly women and girls bearing the full brunt of its investments, including funding fossil fuels and industrial agriculture that fuel climate disasters.
Despite priding itself on being ‘the world’s local bank’, HSBC seems to be only listening to profit margins and boardroom agendas. The bank can no longer feign ignorance to the environmental destruction and human rights abuses it is causing.
Ahead of its AGM in May, we’re urging HSBC to abandon this disastrous delay and stop financing the fossil fuels and agribusiness corporations that are destroying the planet. The time for kicking the can down the road is over.”
