UK’s Global Clean Power Alliance launch undermined by ongoing fossil fuel subsidies, warns ActionAid.
Commenting on the launch of the UK-led Global Clean Power Alliance at the G20, Zahra Hdidou, Senior Climate Resilience Specialist at ActionAid UK, said: "The UK Government’s commitment supporting climate-affected communities transition to renewables is a crucial first step in fulfilling last year’s COP agreements.
However, today’s announcement risks being undermined by costly carbon capture projects —a flawed solution that does nothing to prevent emissions while diverting much-needed funds away from renewables. Adding further insult to injury, the UK government continues to funnel over £5bn in public subsidies into fossil fuels, exacerbating the climate crisis.
The answer is staring us right in the face. At COP, we’re urging the UK to immediately drop fossil fuel subsidies, ditch the gimmicks, and urgently invest in renewable energy sources. As the UK funds this transition, it would be unjust to burden cash-strapped nations with even more debt as they struggle on the sharp end of a climate crisis that is already costing them billions in losses and damages.”
