ActionAid said: “We are devastated and outraged to learn that a doctor at Al-Awda Hospital in northern Gaza, run by ActionAid’s partner Al-Awda, has been killed by the Israeli military. An Al-Awda spokesperson confirmed that the staff member was shot while on his way to work at the hospital and died from his injuries, despite the best efforts of his colleagues who tried to save him. We demand a full investigation into his killing and for those responsible to be held accountable. Health workers are protected under international humanitarian law and should never, ever be targeted.

“For more than two months now, the north of Gaza has been under siege by the Israeli military, forcing doctors at Al-Awda and other hospitals to work in impossible conditions. Staff and patients face constant danger from airstrikes and attacks, at the same time as being almost completely cut off from supplies of medicines, food and fuel. The situation is catastrophic: the world must act now to stop the north of Gaza being entirely wiped out. There must be a permanent ceasefire now.”
