We welcome today’s ICJ ruling that the military offensive in Rafah must stop and urge the Israeli government to comply

Responding to the ICJ’s announcement that Israel must halt its military actions in Rafah, southern Gaza, ActionAid said:

“We thoroughly welcome today’s ruling by the ICJ that the Israeli government must halt its military actions in Rafah immediately. Our colleagues and partners have witnessed firsthand the devastation wrought on Rafah in recent weeks, with many forced to flee their homes. Aid operations in Rafah are on the verge of total collapse, pushing the desperate and starving population further towards famine.

“We call on the Israeli government to respect the court and comply with its ruling, and for all states to ensure the unequivocal implementation of these crucial measures, including the reopening of the Rafah crossing for humanitarian relief and allowing the unhindered provision of aid.

“We reiterate our calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The Israeli military’s eight-month campaign has caused untold devastation across the entire territory, leaving almost 36,000 people dead - including more than 12,000 women and children - and creating a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. It’s beyond time for the ongoing onslaught to stop.”
